Take Your Time

Self Employment is awesome. I especially love the freedom and flexibility it offers me and my family.

But traditional employment is great too. It can offer a lot more stability than what you might experience as an early stage business owner.

And stability seems to be in short supply nowadays. So if you have stability - you have a full-time or part time job that’s paying the bills, especially if it comes with health insurance coverage - hang on to that.

As much as I’d love for you to be able to make the leap into full-time self employment as soon as you can, I also want you to be safe. Continue to experiment with your side hustle and build your business. But you do not need to rush into anything faster than it makes sense for you and your family.

I recently created a salary replacement calculator to help you estimate how much you should charge, how much you should save, and how long it will take to build a long enough runway to leave your job and launch your business. I need to update it.

I will be reworking the calculations for health insurance costs as soon as that information is available. But suffice it to say, the time horizon for a fully funded safety net is probably going to be a little longer for a lot of people.

And that’s okay. You can keep building - a couple hours at a time; a weekend at a time. You can keep testing your messaging. You can keep making offers. You can keep using your gifts and passions to create something awesome and serve others.

You don’t need to rush.

But don’t slow down. You full-time job isn’t guaranteed either. Starting your own business and maintaining multiple income streams is only going to put you in a more secure position for whatever lies ahead.

And who knows? The next few months might completely rock your world in a good way and open up incredible opportunities for your business and your family.

Hope for the best, but plan for something a little more challenging.

One thing you can be certain about is that I’m rooting for you.

Let me know what your working through right now. I’d love to have a conversation, learn what you have going on, and see if there’s anything I can do to help you along your self-employment journey.
